Hospitality management entails a comprehensive treatment of concepts and ideas . The ideas and concepts are illustrated with examples from the hospitality industry. It involves management of hotels, restaurants, travel, agencies and many other institutions in the hospitality industry.


For hospitality organization to function smoothly and be able to achieve its intended goals and objectives there are basically four management concepts that will enable a hospitality organization should follow.

One of the four concepts is planning. Planning is the foundation of management and is the base upon which to base all the area of management. It requires administration intended to access the present setting of the company and where it is ended to. In case of a restaurant, you need to plan on the kind of services you will offer, the type of staff to employ and where you intend the result to be in future. Failure to plan these will be a case of bad management (Enz, 2009).

The second concept involves organization. This involves preparing and organizing where one has to organize all the available resources well before putting into action any plan they have in mind. Through the organizational process a company is able to determine its configuration, create and maintain relationships as well as be able to assign require resources. Organization also entails staff harmonization and looking for the most appropriate manner of handling tasks and the company’s expenditure. Lastly a company ought to decide on the most appropriate departments to be in charge of authority and responsibilities. For example in a travel agency the organization ought to organize the available resources and its staff and determine the best suite department to undertake a certain function (Enz, 2009).

The third concept involves direction. This function is intended to help the management control and be able to oversee the actions of its staff which in turn helps the staff in achieving the organizations objectives. Moreover it will go along way in assisting the staff in accomplishing their personal as well career goals. Highly provoking employees help them surpass in doing their job and also help in achieving the organizations goals. It is vital to have a productive environment at work, creating good personal relationships, as well as having a solution to problems. Effective communication is key in achieving this. Managers need to understand the process of communication and improving any weak areas. The best way of finding the areas that need improvement is by consulting themselves and others at regular intervals. This will result in better relationships and assist them to have better directing plans. For example in the lodging industry it is good to communicate with employees in order to be able to determine problems they face in performing their work (McCabe, 2008).

The final function is to control. Control includes coming up with performance standards. These standards are based on the company’s goals. It also entails evaluation and report of actual performance at work. A company should study the points and compare all the two things. The comparison of both determines actions to correct and prevent. In solving of job performance problems, management should speak to the employee straightforwardly. If there are not enough resources, management then has to lower their standards. With this balance the management can solve any problems as well as be able to take any preventive measures necessary against the outcome. For example in the tourism industry the management has to have in place control mechanisms in job performance. These control mechanisms will depend on the organizations resources. Efficient and effective management results in success enabling the company to achieve its objectives and goals (McCabe, 2008).

It is evident therefore that for a hospitality organization to achieve its ultimate goals and aims, the management needs to work creatively in solving problems in all the four concepts. Management needs to see accomplishing of goals as well as look in to the process that is the best for the organization.
