Feminism refers to the advocacy for the rights of women on the ground of equality for both sexes. Therefore feminism seeks to establish equal opportunities for women similar to those of men. The film ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ also rebranded as Live. Die. Repeat is an American Science fiction movie that was produced in the year 2014. The main actors of the movie are Emily Blunt, and Tom Cruise. The director of the film ‘Edge of Tomorrow,’ is known by the name of Doug Liman. The film is based on a Japanese light novel adapted in the year 2004 ‘All You Need is Kill’ written by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. Feminism is one of the themes that dominate the film from the beginning to the end. To begin with, the main actors of the film, Cruise and Blunt have been provided with equal opportunities to be the starring in the movie. With Emily Blunt being presented with an equal opportunity to be on the forefront, feminism is achieved in that both the men and women have been provided with an equal chance of depicting their abilities in the film.
Various reasons also make the film be depicted as full of feminism. The movie revolves about the development of super soldiers who are trained to fight against the invasion of the aliens and to safeguard the lives of the American people. With the mind of protecting the people and the American nation as well, there arises the need for the development of super soldiers who would be trained and sent into the battlefield to fight the aliens. Among the soldiers, Emily Blunt is trained as one of the super soldiers along with the other males. The inclusion of the female in the development of super soldiers indicates that women are provided with equal opportunities as men especially in such fields that no so many women would be capable of getting involved and being mostly considered as a part dominated by men. Through this, the theme of feminism is achieved through granting equal opportunities to men and women to get trained as super soldiers.
At the beginning of the film, we are introduced to the media where the news about the invasion by the aliens is being broadcasted. Here, we find various stations having their broadcasters as being male while others females. From this perspective, we find that the media have played a significant role in ensuring equality between men and women. Similar news is being broadcasted by the various media the presenters being both males and females. It is therefore undeniable that in the film women in the media industry have been provided with equal opportunities as men and thus promoting feminism.
Leadership is another aspect as to which the element of feminism has been displayed in the film. Men and women have been mandated and trusted to act at various leadership capacities and to which they have done their best by delivering quality leadership to their people. From the film, there are various male leaders in the army, with Tom Cruise being a major and to whom was to maintain the title even despite being relocated to the battlefield. On the other side, Emily Blunt being one of the starring in the film has been provided with the rank of a sergeant, and therefore she is among the leaders in the army. Being a woman leader among the men is an aspect that fulfills the theme of feminism as women have been entrusted with the various leadership positions as men, a proof of equality for both men and women.
The battlefront is one of the fields that are considered as being dominated by men and that women are thought not to participate. The main reason for women not participating in the battlefields is that they are considered weak and that they may not endure the harshness of the battle. However in the film ‘Edge of Tomorrow,’ this is not the case as Emily Blunt is given an equal opportunity like the other men to fight in the front of the battlefield. Fighting in the battlefield is one of the decisions that requires great courage and devotion as one is aware that they may either get out of the battle alive or dead and therefore one has to be strong enough to make such a decision. Despite fighting for the country and displaying the act of patriotism, without being brave enough, an individual may not make it to the battlefield and therefore having Emily Blunt of the forefront is an excellent representation of gender in fighting for their country. Through having both women and women in the battlefield, we get to know that women also have an equal opportunity as men to portray their patriotism and as well proof their bravery among men.
Equal treatments among women and men are evident in the film especially during the wearing of the heavy robotic machinery. The females are not given special treatment than that of men, and therefore, they have no option rather than to endure what men are passing through in the training and as well in the battle. Throughout the movie, women, specifically, the starring Emily Blunt is subjected to the same training as men for the fight against the aliens. Besides, she is not provided with special fighting equipment but made to have one of the similar suits worn by other soldiers. The issue of being exposed to similar training as well as being provided with the same arsenal is an aspect of feminism in that there is no special treatment for the different sexes but rather treated equally. Women and men in the film are equal, and no discrimination is seen primarily in the line of gaming. The card game is one of the games played by the soldiers, and both men and women take place in playing the game. The aspect of equal participation for both sexes in games implies that equality is achieved in both women and men in the film.
Concerning commands, both men and women in the various leadership positions give commands and directions to their respective subjects without compromise. Emily Blunt who is a woman is seen giving orders to the doctor asking him to explain to explain to Cruise about the aliens. In the same time, Cruise is subjected to command by his seniors especially when he said that he could not accept the mission and he was told that it was not a request but an order. The issue of providing orders and commands is done by the authorities, and this suggests that both men and women are offered equal opportunities in authority where they are entitled to direct, give orders and cater for the welfare of their subjects.
It is always considered difficult to convince a person to do something that he probably doesn’t like or doesn’t want to do. In the film, Tom Cruise is not convinced by the explanations given by the doctor about the aliens as he has the perception that the doctor is blackmailing him. To the aid of the doctor, Emily Blunt takes the role of convincing Cruise, where she tells him that the more he dies, he can be able to restrain the monster from resetting time. There are several instances that Emily Blunt is seen convincing Cruise, in another occasion is at the battlefield when she tells Cruise to find her when he wakes up and again during the training when she tells Cruise that he can do it by helping her find the monster alien.
In the past and even the present in some countries, women are not given the privilege to fly airplanes leave alone driving vehicles. In the film, this is entirely a thing of the past as both men and women can drive and fly planes. After identifying the location of the master alien, Emily Blunt and Tom Cruise are headed to the mountains to find and kill the monster. In the process they realized that they could not make it on barefoot but need to take a ride, Blunt and Cruise identify two vehicles which they used to travel. Emily Blunt takes one of the vehicles and does the driving perfectly. Afterward, they find a plane and they use it to fly to the mountain. Women in the film are provided with the same and equal opportunities, and there is no discrimination regarding the limits of exploration. It is, therefore, right to claim that feminism is evident in the film as the women, specifically Emily Blunt has been provided an equal opportunity to drive and fly a plane. Dominance is another aspect that can be used to demonstrate the presence of feminism in the film. Both male and female sexes have proven to be dominant at an equal level in that one sex require the other to fulfill their quests. Emily Blunt representing the females needed the presence of Tom Cruise to help her trace the monster alien to kill it, and this calls for the collaboration between the two sexes.
The film ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ has played a significant role in ensuring that both men and women in the film have been provided with equal opportunities throughout the film. The main characters Emily Blunt and Tom Cruise have been the agents used to portray the issues of equality among men and women. To some extent, one of the sexes would not do without the other as they needed one another to complete their missions and as well as complement one another. Emily Blunt has been used to counter the male dominance in the film, is portrayed as a brave soldier and a leader who is devoted to eliminating the aliens and preventing them from attacking the citizens. Feminism has therefore been well represented in the film, and both sexes have contributed sufficiently to ensure the plot development and characterization in the movie.
