COVID-19: During this unprecedented event in history, we have been challenged to think carefully about how best to nurture learning and well-being within the CSUSB community. Course Objectives
This laboratory class provides the opportunity to experience the responsibilities involved in planning, conducting, and analyzing a psychological experiment. In addition, students will learn how to write a manuscript for publication of a psychological experiment. The purpose is to provide the fundamental skills needed to conduct and evaluate psychological research and to gain an understanding of the Scientific Method through hands-on experience.
Learning Objectives
The learning objectives for this course include the following:
Developing information literacy while engaging in scholarly research within psychology.
In other words, we will work together to help you identify what information is needed, understand how the information is organized, identify the best sources of information for a given need, locate those sources, evaluate the sources critically, share that information, integrate the document and use sources properly to support your ideas in a paper.
Proficiency in the use of the American Psychological Association writing style.
This includes, but it not limited to learning to use the American Psychological Association citation/reference style appropriately.
Demonstrate basic problem-solving skills and show competence in applied analytical skills.
The ability to evaluate research practices within the ethical framework established by American Psychological Association (2010).

Course Grade
There will not be a separate grade for the Lab portion of Research Methods in Psychology.
NOTE: In order to pass the course, you must earn at least 60% of the total lecture section points AND at least 60% of the total lab section points. Failing to do so, REGARDLESS of the total number of points you earn in either section (Lecture or Lab), will result in a failing final grade for the course.

Course Requirements
ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION: Regular attendance and participation are critical to your success in this course. Missing even one session can greatly hinder your ability to understand the material and perform well.
Attendance will be taken each lab meeting via Blackboard and several activities occur throughout the semester which leads to a total of 30 attendance points.
Attendance points cannot be made up
LIBRARY ASSIGNMENT: The purpose of this assignment is to help you become familiar with some of the research tools in the library and help you to distinguish between and find different types of articles.
The pre-class homework assignment is due before class on the due date
The library workshop will be completed online (link on Blackboard)
The library lab report is completed after the workshop and is due before class on the due date
I will provide you with the access code for the lab report after the workshop has been completed.
APA QUIZ: The APA Style & Plagiarism quiz will be based on the APA Manual and material we cover during the first several weeks of the course. The quiz will be administered via Blackboard.
The quiz is timed for 50 minutes.
The APA quiz can only be made up if you have a verifiable emergency.
EXPERIMENTS: Two separate experiments will be conducted as class projects. Each experiment will culminate in an individual research paper, written and submitted by each student. These papers must be written in APA style and will make up the majority of your grade for the lab section of PSYC 3311.
You are required to participate fully in the data collection process. Not attending the lectures describing the instructions for the experiment will result in a 5% deduction from the corresponding research paper. The penalty for not participating in an experiment (i.e., failure to submit data) is a 10% deduction from the corresponding research paper. Students who miss the data collection process lecture and also fail to participate (i.e., provide data) will receive a 15% deduction to the corresponding research paper.
RESEARCH PAPERS: Experimental papers must be written in APA style. They will be typed according to the current APA manual (7th ed.). Papers will be graded by APA section, for both content and APA style.
Grading will be based on the following criteria:
• Procedure– The assignment meets the specific guidelines discussed in class.
• Evidence– You must support your statements and arguments.
• Organization– Your paper should have the proper structure and formatting.
• Mechanics– Correct word usage, spelling, punctuation, grammar and syntax. (I will not rewrite your paper for you; this course is not an English composition class!)
If you need help with the basic mechanics of writing a paper, tutors at the writing center will be happy to help you.
Drafts: Drafts are required. I will review your drafts even if not complete, but they must be typed, double-spaced, and in APA format. I will only accept electronic copies submitted to Blackboard and they must be turned in by the draft deadlines in the Lab Schedule. I will only review one draft for each paper. I do not review sections of papers via email. ALL DRAFTS MUST BE SUBMITTED IN WORD DOC FORMAT TO RECEIVE FEEDBACK (NOT PDF!)
Just because you earn full points on your rough draft DOES NOT mean you will get an ‘A’ on your final paper. Your draft score is just an indicator of understanding of concepts, completeness of sections, and general writing quality for the rough draft. More stringent criteria are used for assessing points for the final paper.
Late drafts will not receive points, but will still receive feedback
Final Papers: You will be required to submit your paper to turnitin.com. Papers can only be uploaded one time, so do not submit your paper until it is complete.
Late penalties will apply if your submission is not completed by the due date/time.

You are required to provide a copy of the first page of each journal article that you used for the paper (the ones provided for you are not required, only those you found on your own).
Late Assignments: PAPERS ARE DUE ON TURN-IT-IN BY CLASS TIME (9 am) ON THE DUE DATE.
Penalties will be applied to the final grade of the late paper.
This includes weekends, holidays and days the class does not meet.
If you anticipate not having internet access on the day an assignment is due, you may:
Turn the assignment in early
Make arrangements with me before the due date
Do not send me your paper via email unless arrangements have been made in advance.
Exceptions may be granted due to an unavoidable and documented circumstances, per University policy.

EMAIL: It is very important to check your email/Blackboard for updates/course announcements. It is your responsibility to make sure that your campus e-mail and/or the email associated with your Blackboard account is active and has the desired setting that you want. YOU are responsible for any announcements, assignments, and changes to course content or schedule made by the instructor through e-mail. Make sure you check your campus e-mail (and Blackboard announcements) on a daily basis.
PLAGIARISM: Plagiarism is a very serious issue. Plagiarism refers to presenting another’s words or ideas as if they were your own. This includes the work of other students. Plagiarism of any kind is strictly forbidden and will be prosecuted in accordance with University regulations. Plagiarism results in an “F” for the entire course. Plagiarism, even unintentional, is unacceptable. We will review how to properly cite another writer’s words or ideas so that you can avoid plagiarism.
Sharing papers: All written material must be completed individually. Papers are not a team or group project.
Blackboard: It is unacceptable to copy and paste from any materials on Blackboard or from lecture handouts. Doing so is considered plagiarism and may result in an “F” in the class.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: Cheating is a terrible but unfortunate reality in the classroom. This course is designed so that anyone who wants to learn the material can learn it. So please, do not cheat! However, if you are caught cheating, you will be automatically dropped from the course and given an F.
