Connors, Kelly, et al. “State Gun Laws That Actually Reduce Gun Deaths.” Boston University, Boston University, 6 Aug. 2019, http://www.bu.edu/articles/2019/state-gun-laws-that-reduce-gun-deaths/. Accessed 23 October 2019
The article gives the relationship between reduction of gun death and legislation of gun laws. The author points out the great concern in America where every day we wake up to news of mass shooting for example in Gilroy California, El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio. The author refutes the argument often used to argue against gun control that most people who conduct mass shooting are often mental instability. He argues that although they may be mentally unstable, their ease to access guns is what concerns many. Most perpetrators have often been reported to just have walked into a gun store and purchased a gun without being asked a lot of questions. It is because of this that gun control laws need to be reviewed. The article points out states with laws such as who can access firearms, background-check laws and laws prohibiting sales of guns to people with misdemeanor had low firearm related crimes.
I chose this article as it contains a conglomeration of works by other scholars who have examined this topic. This paper will be important in citing examples of laws that can be set in place to ensure that gun related violence decline. The article includes new methodological as well as theoretical bridges thus bringing different point of views on the matter. This will ensure while writing my paper I am not biased on my way of thinking. The audience is any person student or stakeholder that may be interested on acquiring information on gun control.
Jehan, Faisal, et al. “The burden of firearm violence in the United States: stricter laws result in safer states.” Journal of injury and violence research 10.1 (2018): 11.
This article examines the many violent related cases where guns have been involved. United States has been known to be one country where people are able to obtain guns quite easily, for every 100 individuals, there are 101 guns. Often every week, there has to be death related with gun violence. From the research, gun related injuries begun to rise from the year 2001. The research was conducted by looking at patients who had suffered trauma since 2011 from gunshot wounds. This research wanted to establish if legislation helped in reducing gun related violence. According to the research, states that had strict firearm laws had significantly lower number of gun related injuries as compared to the states that had non-strict fire arm laws. The most affected individuals are often young black men.
This article will be a key reference point in my research paper as it will help me make a connection on how strict firearm laws are important in reducing crime related violence. Often people have argued that strict gun laws are not a solution thus having a research paper that gives the statistics on the comparison between different states with different laws is important. The article includes real reports on the effect of having lenient laws on gun control, rather than a piece with only speculation.
Jones, Michael A., and George W. Stone. “The US gun-control paradox: Gun buyer response to congressional gun-control initiatives.” Journal of Business & Economics Research (JBER) 13.4 (2015): 167-174.
This article explores response the response of firearm ammunition users on the initiative by Obama in 2013 to control gun use. After the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting president Obama initiated a dialog that proposed gun control. Obama admiration wanted a ban on bump stock which included semiautomatic rifles. However, what followed was an increase in gun sales leading to gun shortage and stock outs. Record sales by U.S firearm manufacturers were recorded in 2013. The NRA had opposed this dialog and the response by the firearm consumers after the threat by the government, it was clear that they were not ready to have the gun control dialogue. Gun control issue has been a sensitive topic among Americans as most believe the right to bear arms is an important right enshrined in the constitution and no one should interfere with it.
This article will help me in my research in exploring the reaction that has been gotten from the past when measures to reduce gun control were discussed. Although many Americans are tired of the mass shootings most prefer other ways to try and solve this issue without regulating gun ownership. This paper will also be a key reference point showing the power NRA has on both the government and the gun consumers.
Lott, John R. More guns, less crime: Understanding crime and gun control laws. University of Chicago Press, 2013.
This book proposes that an increase in guns is likely to lead to a decrease in crimes. Lott states that most US states that have largest number of gun ownership also have largest drop in crimes. The “shall-issues” law allows gun owners to carry their weapons as long as they are licensed, do not have a criminal record or any mental health related issue. According to the author people are less likely to commit crimes because they risk attacking someone with a gun. Concealed hand guns are able to help reduce crime in two main ways: First criminals are afraid potential victims are armed second those with guns are able to stop crimes or defend themselves. According to Lot, when guns are restricted a situation is created whereby one cannot defend themselves from bad people or attackers.
The author is a gun rights advocate who has often pointed out the advantages associated with gun ownership. This paper will be a key referencing pint for my article while addressing the cons of gun regulation. It will help me cite situations in which guns have proved to be useful. This reference is helpful as it helps in bringing out the concept of gun ownership and fighting or deterring crimes. The audience is any person student or stakeholder that may be interested on acquiring information on gun control.
Luca, Michael, Deepak Malhotra, and Christopher Palanquin. The impact of mass shootings on gun policy. No. w26187. National Bureau of Economic Research, 2019.
The article by Luca and colleagues focus on the effect of mass shootings in the development of laws and policies. The authors provide three significant impacts on mass shootings, which include; the increase in policy responses, significant increase in influence on people, and also the enactment of bills based on the party in power. The article provides a critical analysis of how mass shootings affect policy by revealing that the Democrat-controlled legislature tends to have a better response compared to any other party. The article is crucial to this research as it helps outline how political parties shape up gun control laws and policies.
Manier, Lauren. “Does Gun Control Really Work?” National Center for Health Research, 12 Apr. 2018, http://www.center4research.org/does-gun-control-really-work/.
The article by Manier analyses the topic of gun control by focusing on the legislative and policy aspect of the matter. The article provides essential information that is backed by evidence of gun control policies. The policies include those that have failed and also those that have been effective. The author’s perspective on permit-to-purchase laws and their implementation is essential as it provides evidence on the impact of gun control laws. This article is vital in my research as it allows for an analysis of the effects of gun control laws in society.
Morrall, Andrew. “The science of gun policy: a critical synthesis of research evidence on the effects of gun policies in the United States.” Rand health quarterly, 8.1 (2018).
Morral’s article takes a unique approach by providing information on the scientific impact of gun policies in the United States. One of the main strengths of the article is that it links scientific data with the different gun control laws that have been previously enacted in the United States. Also, the article provides solid recommendations on gun control policies, which are backed by scientific evidence. Morall’s article fits into my research as it helps to provide a scientific-based perspective on the effects of gun controls, thus making the research more credible.
“Pros & Cons ProCon.org.” Gun Control, https://gun-control.procon.org/.
This article provides very useful insight into the discussion of gun control by comparing the advantages and disadvantages of gun control. Whether it is about supporting gun control policies that undermine the rights of gun owners for the sake of reducing gun violence, evaluating the advantages and disadvantages of gun control is very crucial. The article begins by introducing the statistics of gun ownership in the country, putting into perspective the magnitude of the issue in question. Evaluation of the advantages and disadvantages of gun control policies is inspired by the debate of those in support and those against the issue and weighs each argument on the basis of evidence.
Santhanam, Laura. “Most Americans Support These 4 Types of Gun Legislation, Poll Says.” PBS, Public Broadcasting Service, 10 Sept. 2019, https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/most-americans-support-stricter-gun-laws-new-poll-says.
Santhanam discusses the emphasis on gun control to deal with gun violence rather than protecting the rights of gun owners. If gun owners continue to enjoy the rights to bear arms, they should be required to undergo more rigorous mental health screening and treatment as appropriate. The author mentions the importance of funding policies that require compulsory background checks for potential arm owners. The article primarily discusses the statistics of Americans who support various legislations to deal with gun control to protect violence. This article is very useful for the topic of gun control because of its use of real-time statistics. The opinion of Americans as provided by these statistics informs the best position on this issue, which means most Americans support the idea that gun rights should not come at the expense of protecting the lives of innocent citizens, this data is what informs legislation.
Spitzer, Robert J. Politics of gun control. Routledge, 2015.
This is a newer edition of a similar text and covers the developments in gun policy, the cases of mass shootings that have been disturbing the peace in America. Spitzer discusses events that have influenced the calls for changes in legislation at various levels of government, some that have come to pass, and others that have failed. The author has been a renowned figure on gun control and policy and has been instrumental as a member of various agencies such as NRA and Brady Center. This book provides useful information for a researcher by providing up to date data and follows up of the gun ownership, deaths as a result of gun violence, school shootings, border patrols and new topics such as the role of social media, magazine regulation and mantel health initiatives that relate to shootings.
